"Sarah was an absolute delight to work with. She was warm, made me feel comfortable from the get go, and gave wonderful encouragement throughout the shoot. Thank you, Sarah, for giving me the opportunity to be part of your Body Love Project.
In today’s society, it is unfortunately ‘part of the norm’ to glaze over all your positive features while looking in the mirror to point out everything you wish you could change. I know I am a culprit for doing that. Why do we compare ourselves to others who have different bodies, proportions, and features? We are all beautifully unique!
Over the past few years I have held a fairly consistent weight. Last year I went to LA for a planned 3 month trip, and during that time, I developed the worst body image of myself I have ever had. My skin broke out really bad due to the air pollution and kicked myself as I didn't take of my really good skin products with me. I was stressing about my body (even though I was walking most places and attending a gym), and I was worried about my Dad who was undergoing cancer treatment. The place where I was staying didn't have the best of mirrors, or maybe that was my mind playing tricks, and I didn't have scales to weigh myself. I felt as though I was putting on weight.
I had to cut my trip short by a couple of weeks as my Dad’s health was deteriorating. Unfortunately, he passed in November and my heart broke. I don't think I'll ever really get over him being taken so soon. My skin settled after using my skin products back home, but while grieving, and a having a slower work schedule, I had put on a couple of kilos. Yes, I am small framed, but it's how I felt within myself which was rather negative. I wouldn't say I was eating crap, but I wasn't making the best food choices. I wasn’t attending dance classes, I wasn’t performing every weekend like I had before I left for LA, and I wasn’t working out.
In the new year, I decided to join Kayla Itsines and see what her body challenges were all about. I started a few weeks ago and with her easy to follow workouts and food preparations, I felt a change within the first 5 days. And here is the thing, I have heard people tell me, “don’t look at the amount on the scales, it’s how you feel”. And I have to say it is so true. I haven’t necessarily lost anything according to the scales, but my clothes are definitely feeling different. I am beginning to change my mindset on having to be a certain weight, especially when training. I am beginning to point out all the things I do love about my body again.
I saw a photo on Instagram the other day saying something along the lines of “don't work out because you hate your body, work out because you love your body”. Wow! So true when you think about it! Invest the time, even 28 minutes a day according to Kayla and other health professionals, to be healthier and stronger because you love yourself, regardless of what shape you are in.
My beautiful boyfriend tells me I'm beautiful and sexy every single day, without a beat. I'll admit that my overall positive wellbeing is suffering as I'm grieving the loss of my Dad. Slowly, I am working through it with the love and support of my family and close friends. Although every single day is different, I remind myself to be kind to my body and soul.
What a truly amazing project this is, Sarah! Once again, thank you for giving me the opportunity to be part of it. I am looking forward to following the journeys of other beautiful women."
This is what the Body Love Project is all about. Photographing authentic women, sharing their journey, and inspiring others. This project aims to celebrate women and their beauty. We are not a number on a scale, a dress size, and our beauty isn't even based on a reflection in the mirror. We are worth far more than this. We are even more powerful when we share the strengths of our bodies, and especially when we raise each other higher.
Thank you so much Stephanie for getting involved with the Body Love Project, and for sharing your incredible journey!
